Critical Spyware Alert from WhatsApp

WhatsApp has issued an official warning about a sophisticated cyberattack attempt targeting approximately 200 users worldwide. Following an internal investigation, it was discovered that a fake version of WhatsApp, developed by an Italian spyware vendor, had been distributed in an attempt to steal users’ data. The company informed the limited number of affected or at-risk users directly by sending them security notifications.

Although this fake application appears to be the original WhatsApp on the surface, it contains malicious code running in the background that can take control of the device. This spyware is reportedly capable of reading user messages, accessing contact information, and even tracking the device’s location data. Cybersecurity experts emphasize that such attacks are often aimed at specific individuals as part of state-backed operations or private surveillance activities.

Security authorities remind users that, to protect themselves, they should never install the app from third-party websites or through APK files. Using only official app stores such as Google Play Store and the App Store, and keeping the application updated to the latest version, is considered the most effective defense against these kinds of sophisticated spyware threats.
