The CrowdStrike Falcon sensor update, released on July 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Turkish time, caused a major crisis for millions of users globally running Windows 10 and 11 operating systems and Microsoft Server operating systems with CrowdStrike's endpoint security software. This update caused systems to blue screen error (BSOD) and become unusable.

CrowdStrike announced in an official statement that it is aware of the issue and its engineering teams are working on a solution. It was stated that the problem was detected and fixed and only Windows systems were affected. As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the disruption was not caused by a cyber attack.

This incident highlights the potential risks of automatic version updates on critical systems such as Anti-virus/Endpoint Protection/XDR security software. We recommend taking the following precautions to avoid similar situations.

  • Postponing updates: It would be safer to postpone automatic updates on critical systems and first try updates in test environments and identify potential problems.

  • Create backups: Regular backups of critical data can prevent potential data loss and ensure fast recovery of systems.

  • Prepare contingency plans: Preparing contingency plans in advance on what to do in case of similar problems facilitates crisis management and ensures business continuity.

  • Communication with the security software provider: Following the official communication channels of the security software provider ensures that you are informed about potential problems and have access to up-to-date solutions.
