US-based financial technology provider Marquis has become the latest victim of ransomware gangs. The systems of the company, which provides marketing and compliance infrastructure to hundreds of banks and credit unions, were breached by exploiting a vulnerability in the firewall (SonicWall) they use.

According to initial assessments of the attack, highly critical personal data such as names, addresses, dates of birth, credit card numbers, and social security numbers of more than 400,000 individuals were stolen by hackers. The scale of this massive data breach, believed to be the work of the "Akira" ransomware group, is expected to grow even further with new reports coming from other states.
Some of the precautions we need to take to protect against these types of attacks include:
Do not open emails from untrusted sources.
Use multi-factor authentication (MFA).
Keep your system updated to the latest version at all times.
Monitor login logs regularly.
Track the security of mobile devices.
