Cybersecurity experts have taken a significant step that will please victims of the "FunkSec" malware, which locks computers and demands a ransom. A tool developed to recover encrypted files has been made available completely free of charge to everyone. This welcome move comes after it was understood that the cybercriminal group behind the software had not launched any attacks for a long time and had ceased its activities.

This ransomware, which has victimized hundreds of institutions, particularly targeting technology, education, and public sectors, has an interesting story behind it. Research indicates that this group actually consisted of inexperienced hackers who wrote code using artificial intelligence tools, simply trying to gain notoriety. The fact that no new victim data has been released for months also proves that the group has disbanded or become inactive.

Security experts say that victims whose files have been encrypted can easily access this free tool through the "No More Ransom" platform. However, experts also have a critical warning: In case of a possible malfunction during the decryption process, there is a risk of complete data corruption, so it is essential to back up the files before starting the process.

Some of the precautions we need to take to protect against these types of attacks include:

  • Do not open emails from untrusted sources.

  • Use multi-factor authentication (MFA).

  • Keep your system updated to the latest version at all times.

  • Monitor login logs regularly.

  • Track the security of mobile devices.
