Can a File Name Tell You Everything?
Can you really understand what's inside a file just by looking at its name?
At first glance, the answer may seem quite simple.
· Customer_List.xlsx
· GDPR.pdf
· Contract_2025.docx
However, in real-world enterprise environments, things are rarely that simple.
A significant portion of millions of files remain stored in systems for years under names such as:
· Final.docx
· New.pdf
· Scan000145.pdf
· IMG_4589.jpg
· Document1.pdf
· Copy(3).docx
none of which reveal anything meaningful about their contents.
So, do you really know what's inside these files?
A seemingly ordinary document named "Scan000145.pdf" could contain:
· Copies of identity documents,
· Passport information,
· Customer contracts,
· Financial statements,
· Personal data

This is where one of the biggest misconceptions in data security begins.
A file name does not describe its contents;
Neither does the file extension.
Nor does the folder in which it is stored.
The real information exists only inside the document.
That is why modern Data Discovery solutions do not rely on file names.
They look inside the document.
They analyze its content.
They seek to understand its context.
Because what truly matters is not the file name...
It is the information inside.
This is exactly the approach GEODI takes.
The platform does more than simply index file names or extensions.
By analyzing content, it:
· Identifies sensitive data.
· Reveals personal information.
· Detects financial records.
· Correlates duplicate content.
· Makes the same information stored across different systems visible.
As a result, organizations begin to understand, for the first time, data they have stored for years without ever truly knowing what it contained.
Because data security does not begin with file names...
It begins with understanding the information.
Key Takeaway
File names are only labels. The real information is always inside the file.
