Introducing Brain Cipher

Recently, the new Brain Cipher ransomware operation has begun targeting organizations around the world, most recently gaining media attention with an attack on Indonesia's temporary National Data Center. On June 20, one of the temporary National Data Centers was hit by a cyberattack that encrypted government servers and disrupted immigration services, passport control, issuance of event permits and other online services.

The government confirmed that a new ransomware operation called Brain Cipher was behind the attack, which disrupted the functioning of more than 200 government agencies.

While Brain Cipher initially launched without a data leak site, recent ransom notes now link to one, indicating that the data is still under attack and will be used in double extortion schemes. Like other ransomware operations, Brain Cipher will breach a corporate network and spread horizontally to other devices. So far, the ransomware gang has been seen demanding ransoms ranging from $20,000 to $8 million.
