Financially motivated cyber attackers have launched a comprehensive ransomware attack against the IT infrastructure of the Irish Office of the Ombudsman. The institution, which urgently took all its systems offline to contain the threat, is considering the strong possibility that sensitive citizen data may have been exfiltrated by the hackers. Immediately following the incident, the National Cyber Security Centre and law enforcement agencies stepped in to launch a detailed forensic investigation.

To minimize the potential damage of a data leak, the institution applied to the High Court and secured an injunction prohibiting the publication of the stolen data. However, the toll of the attack has been severe; the systems of several critical government departments that share the Ombudsman Office's IT infrastructure, such as the Commissioner for Environmental Information and the Commission for Public Service Appointments, have also collapsed. Due to the ongoing cyber crisis, the institutions' phone lines have been paralyzed, and significant disruptions continue to plague citizens' ongoing complaint and application processes.
Some of the precautions we need to take to protect against these types of attacks include:
Do not open emails from untrusted sources.
Use multi-factor authentication (MFA).
Keep your system updated to the latest version at all times.
Monitor login logs regularly.
Track the security of mobile devices.
