Risk of Google’s New .zip and .mov Domains

In early of May, Google released eight new domains such as .com or .uk. These domains, although it may seem harmless, two of them may not be so innocent. .zip and .mov domains can be very useful for online fraud types such as phishing attack.

The reason for this is that one is used in data compression and the other is the extension of video format files developed by Apple. The concern that is already taking effect is that URLs masquerading as filenames will open up even more possibilities for digital scams like phishing, for web users to click on malicious links pretending to be something legitimate. Scammers can buy a url with these common file extensions .zip and .mov, and users who enter their site thinking it's an app can automatically connect to a malicious website.

Some of the measures we need to take to protect ourselves from such attacks are;

• You should always use the most update security measures on your system,

• End users should be trained according to the developing attack types,

• Your system should be developed according to the changing attack types,

• All your system and security products should be properly backup and restore test should be performed at regular intervals.
