YunHe Wang was arrested on May 24 on charges stemming from the distribution of malware and the creation and operation of a proxy service known as “911 S5,” according to a statement. This highly sophisticated botnet consisted of infected IP addresses spanning more than 190 countries and remained operational for eight years, starting in 2014.
Wang reportedly earned at least $99 million by providing cybercriminals with access to the network for hundreds of dollars. He was found to have bought luxury cars, watches and real estate with this money. 911 S5 customers allegedly targeted specific pandemic relief programs. It is even stated that more than 5.9 billion dollars was stolen in this way.
Wang is also said to have infected more than 19 million IP addresses worldwide by bundling his malware with other program files, including VPN programs such as MaskVPN and DewVPN, and pirated versions of licensed software. FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the botnet's unprecedented scale, calling it “probably the largest botnet the world has ever seen.”
