Zero Day Attacks

The developers behind file compression software WinRAR patched a Zero Day vulnerability that allowed hackers to hack into crypto and stock trading accounts that allowed victims to install malware on their computers.

On August 23, Singapore-based cybersecurity firm WinRAR reported a zero-day vulnerability in the processing of the ZIP file format. Once the malware is extracted and executed, it allows threat actors to withdraw funds from broker accounts. This vulnerability has been exploited since April 2023. It is not yet known who is behind the attacks that exploit the WinRAR flaw. This vulnerability was fixed with the version released on August 2, 2023.

Measures to be taken to prevent these attacks;

  • Not neglecting the patches and updates of the systems within the institution.

  • Using firewall solutions.

  • Using advanced security products

  • To inform internal employees about IT security principles.

  • Using Two Factor (MFA) authentication.
